Yankee aquire Seattle Pitcher Michael Pineda for Super Prospect Jesus Montero

In a huge trade the Yankees sured up their rotation by adding pitcher Michael Pineda from the Seattle Mariners. The price was steep for the Yankees who sent super prospect Jesus Montero to the Mariners along with Hector Noesi. In return for the highly touted Jesus Montero the Yankees sure up their rotation with one of the most talented young pitchers in baseball. The Yankees also added right handed pitcher Jose Campos.
Pineda is only 23 years old and has long been considered one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. In MLB.com's 2011 minor league prospect list, Pineda was ranked number 13. Jesus Montero, The man that Pineda was traded to the Yankees for, was ranked number 9 on that same list.
Pineda is a dominate strikeout pitcher. He was nearly unhittable in April last year posting 4 wins and a 2.01ERA. As the season wore on Pineda's numbers came back to reality. He finished his rookie campaign with a 9-10 record and a solid 3.74 ERA. Don't let his win loss record fool you, Pineda can pitch. He had a strikeout per 9 inning ratio over 9 and Seattle lost nine of his starts where he gave up 3 runs or less. Those are games that the Yankees offense should turn into wins. I think that you can say that Pineda is pleased with the trade. The New York Yankees tweeted "I never thought I would become a New York Yankee so early into my career. This is the best thing in the world." - Michael Pineda
Seattle will be getting a superstar in the making in Jesus Montero. Montero has been the next great Yankee hitter in waiting for some time. There is little doubt that Jesus Montero can hit, but his skills behind the plate as a catcher have kept him waiting in the minors. Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik said in a statement."With this trade we feel we have acquired a premium offensive talent that has the potential to hit in the middle of our lineup and grow with our other young players." Montero batted .328 with 4 home runs and 12RBI in his 61 at bats with the Yankees last year. He should help Seattle's poor offense immediately. As a team, Seattle hit only .233 last year with very little run production, Montero's bat should fit in nicely.
The Yankees also get Jose Campos. Campos is considered one of the best prospects in Seattle's minor league system. He pitched in A ball last year posting 85 strike outs in 14 starts.

This is a masterstroke by the Yankees - I think Pineda could easily slot in at 3 or 4 in the rotation. I wonder what will happen to A.J Burnett now? He may feel threatened by this signing after a so-so season for him. He may be number 5 but only if Phil Hughes blows it in the Spring. Burnett may be more comfortable now that Posada is gone?
Push trade. Seattle needed offense, Yankees need young pitching. I don't like to see Pineda go as a M's fan, but it sure would be nice to see Jesus come through to his potential. Fan's are starving to root for someone other than Ichiro in the batting line-up. Plus, they ended up with A-Rod, so it would only be fair. Thanks for the read :D
Heh. I personally was never a fan, but I would say with his build/age/and some fine tuning he'll probably turn into a pretty decent #2. I couldn't imagine him being a ace, but he'll be a good inning eater and probably keep his ERA just under 4.
Well, as a Mariner fan this was a hard one to decide upon..there is no doubt we need offense but Pineda will be the ace of some team's staff in the near future. He has that kind of stuff. I can't say I'm real happy for the Yankees but I understand the trade. As for Fister, he is sneaky good and has the mixture of pitches to eat up innings...good hub and it's always nice to talk baseball.
Hey, Mich,
This is a very informative hub.
When it comes to the Yankees trading away Montero for Pineda, I have mixed emotions. The Yanks definitely need another top-notch starter (to compliment C.C. Sabathia), but Montero strikes me as being one of those once-in-a-life-time players. But as you mentioned, his defensive skills are lacking, and for a catcher, that is very critical problem.

Pineda must be thrilled to leave a poor Seattle club and to be joining the Yankees. We'll have to see how many more changes the aging Yankees will be implementing the next few years.
