Headsets for Skype

Stop using your built in microphone!

I've been using Skype for some time now, so I have been through several different headsets. While shopping for headsets, I want to make sure that I don't get a piece of garbage that is going to break in a month. I also want to make sure that my calls are clear for both parties. If you are currently using your laptops built in microphone to talk to people you should really do your family and friends a favor and get a headset. It eliminates all of the fan noise that the built in head phones pick up. Your friends will thank you for not forcing them to hear the sound of an airplane taking off when your fan kicks on. If you are currently shopping for a headset, then you are in the right place. I will show you a few that I like out of the thousands that are for sale out there. I have my personal taste. I prefer the biaural (two ears) headphones, and I don't like to spend too much on them since I usually break them before they die on me. One warning from my experiences, I would not buy any re-manufactured headsets. I got one of those online and it died on me after a few months. One of the few models that malfunctioned before I could accidentally snap it in half.

Logitech Laptop Headset H555

This is a great headset from Logitech. It comes with the USB hook up which is very handy. I prefer the USB versions to the two prong speaker/mic cords. The behind the head design may seem a little weird at first, but you will get used to it. It is believed that the behind the head design prolongs the headset life. For me not sitting or stepping on my headsets usually extends the life. It folds down which makes it very good for traveling with you, and it comes with it's own travel bag. The sound quality for this headset is high and the cost is reasonable. It gets high reviews everywhere and it is the only head set that I have found that is made specifically for laptop use.

  • Foldable and portable high-performance headset for PC or Mac notebooks
  • Noise-cancelling microphone and quick-access mute and volume controls
  • Super wideband audio for crystal-clear Internet calls

Sennheiser-PC-36-USB-Microphone headset for Skype

Sennheiser PC 36 USB Headset

The Sennheiser PC 36 USB Headset is a great option for skype. Sennheiser is known for their high quality acoustics. I have a Sennheiser 31 right now and it works great. It might not look as fancy as some of the other ones that I have owned. It has a simple design and when I first ordered it I thought that it was a piece of crap. I based my opinion on it's chintzy looks, but after using it for a while it has grown on me. It is durable, it sounds great, and the people that I talk to never complain about the sound quality. The fit was a little tight at first, but it breaks in over time. The Sennheiser PC 36 is a little bit better than the one that I bought. I purchased one without the USB hook ups, so I have to use an adapter that isn't very reliable. Be careful to check the plug ins when you are shopping for headsets online. The Sennheiser PC 36 has the direct USB port plug-in and is also supposed to have superior audio to the one that I own. I got mine about 6 months ago and it is still going strong. No complaints so far other than the USB port and I miss my inline mute button. The PC 36 has that available.

Plantronics DSP-400

Plantronics makes some great headsets. I had one that was amazing. I left it on my chair and it got sat on though. They fit very comfortably. Some people complain about the microphone boom, but I never had an issue with it. The sound clarity is amazing and the microphone works great. This one comes with the in-line mute button and volume controls that are really nice to have. It also has a USB plug in, so no crappy adapter to deal with. Overall I like it better than the others, but it costs a little more so you have to determine how much you want to invest in a headset.

  • Digitally enhanced noise-canceling microphone
  • Digital signal processor delivers the full spectrum of the human voice
  • Foldable for easy storage and transport
  • USB interface; 1-year warranty
